England Great Will Carling Endorses the Blog

Carling and an Irishman play one-versus-one rugby at Twickenham. Goodness knows who Will thinks he will pass it to. Note the old school, unadorned white jersey - could we not ditch the rugby league-meets-Arsenal one and get back to plain white? I doubt it.

Gentlemen

I'm not seeking the Democratic nomination but I am pleased to say that the Blog has just received a highly sought-after endorsement. Yes my friends, this humble website has received a great man's seal of approval, and I don't mean Bouch. It has been acknowledged by the man who led England out of the rugby wilderness in the early 1990s and who captained England's first Grand Slam in 11 years back in 1991. As it happens, that was the first Five Nations I remember watching and - unbelievably - the occasion of our first victory in Cardiff for about 25 years. I became conscious of rugby just as England stirred from its long slumber. To me, this guy personified the success and winning attitude of England rugby in the 1990s. Though he's not even a forward, let alone a prop, he's a rugby hero of mine.
He took England to the World Cup final in 1991 and suffered at the hands of Jonah Lomu in 1995, not to mention representing the British and Irish Lions. The last England captain of the amateur era and the first of the professional age, he famously denounced the grandees of the RFU committee as "57 old farts." Yes, gentlemen, I am talking about the first showbusiness England rugby captain. I am talking about Will Carling, who has - as I may have mentioned - just endorsed the Blog.

And he's a modest chap too...

"Chris [he means Harps but mever mind] - how the hell can you refer to me as 'great' !!?? [er perhaps I had been flattering the great man somewhat on http://www.rucku.com/] Either you are very sarcastic - which I like, or you are referring to my waist line!! Great Blog by the way."

So there we have it. Naturally I have extended an offer of the Club's fullest hospitality to Mr Carling. Should he visit, I would propose a lecture on his life in the game and make non-attendance by Australians an offence punishable by mandatory expulsion from the Club.

Otherwise chaps, I hope the May Ball was good although my usual sources are fairly muted on the topic. Please do drop any red hot news into the comment box. Strange to say, I am missing rugby already. Golf just isn't quite the same. Roll on the beginning of the 2008/09 fitness regime I say.

Join Rucku!

Chaps - quick post from your correspondent, who is currently relaxing in the Yorkshire sunshine. Chris Howard has brought the excellent rugby "virtual clubhouse" www.rucku.com to our attention here at the Blog and I wholeheartedly recommend it. It works quite like Facebook (apparently, never usedd FB myself) so you have a wall, rucku friends, photos, videos etc. Plus there won't be many girls using it to waste time.... Some rugby greats are involved and are happy to chat - I have been corresponding with the great Will Carling himself. There are also some good articles and lots of other fun stuff so sign up pronto. Ta ta for now. Harps
